The maximum size of boat that can navigate throughout the Forth & Clyde Canal is length: 68' 6" (20.9 metres) It is 34 miles long and has 37 locks.The canal was opened in1790 and large enough for the sea going vessels of the time to navigate from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde.

For more detailed information, follow the links below: The Falkirk Wheel was constructed to connect the 2 canals and has become a tourist attraction in it's own right. It is 35 miles (56 km) long and it runs from the River Carron at Grangemouth to the River Clyde at Bowling, and had an important basin at Port Dundas in Glasgow. The company owed much to the energy of its chief shareholder, Lord Dundas, who lived in London but whose estates surrounded the eastern end at Falkirk and Grangemouth. As sea vessls grew in size they could no longer pass threw the canal and advent of the railway led to a steady decline in traffic.

The Forth & Clyde Canal runs from the river Clyde at Bowling to the river Forth at Grangemouth, and is joined by the Union Canal at Falkirk. The canal forms part of our Glasgow to Balloch Cycle Route which takes you from the city centre to the banks of Loch Lomond on nice traffic free paths.

Forth & Clyde Canal. King Charles thought to make the connection for his warships (1650) and the final section from Glasgow to the Clyde was finished with the help of a Government loan (1784).
