Rather than amplifying the privileged medical gaze, the paintings themselves propose an alternative model, removed from the clinic, extended onto canvas, and rethinking the very notion of the portrait—now, more than 100 years later—as an act of compassion.

Jessica Helfand is an artist, designer, and writer. For more than twenty years she taught at Yale University, where she was Senior Critic in Graphic Design, the Artist in Residence at the Yale Institute for Network Science, and a lecturer in Helfand has written for many national publications, including the Helfand was appointed by the Postmaster General to the U.S. Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee in 2006, where she chaired the Design Subcommittee until 2012.
