I was sitting outside and saw all these little lights flashing around me. It was a sad day when we moved out here to Oregon, because we don't have them out here.I grew up in a suburb of NY and we had them! Fireflies produce defensive steroids in their bodies that make them unpalatable to predators. There must have been dozens of them-all flickering on and off! I use no bug sprays of any kind and no herbicides because I'm too afraid of killing off the good bugs and I'm very serious about doing my part to protect the bees....yes all of them; wasps and hornets included. Unlike a light bulb, which produces a lot of heat in addition to light, a firefly's light is "cold light" without a lot of energy being lost as heat. I love sitting outside on a warm summers night and seeing their flickering lights.

I mean when i was little if you looked up into the night skies there was thousands of stars in the sky and there was thousands of fireflies everywhere.
