In no small measure, this is down to excellent understated acting and high quality sets. The MEDIUMRARE Widescreen Edition in original 2.35 is stunning. I had debated on upgrading to the Blu release by Mediumrare and decided to take the bite as the price was nice. Don't make the mistake I did! , Today, with the knowledge of some now declassified nuclear warhead 'close calls' caused by computer 'glitches', all of a sudden this movie takes on new meaning.
The celebrations end abruptly however, when Colossus sends a message on the screen of a terminal, warning of the presence of another defence system. This is no comic-book monster computer but a coldly logical, ruthlessly rational machine that isn't malfunctioning but simply executing its original programming all too well, and, having decided that man is his own worst enemy, the dictatorship it creates is all too believable.
