It is home to 400 bird species, 121 mammal species, 140 reptile and amphibian species, 800 different kinds of trees and 3,000 vascular plants.Other residents of the reserve include Jaguars, Vampire Bats, the highly intelligent, white-faced Capuchin Monkey and the Collared Pecary, a small mammal that resembles a pig. The Monteverde Cloud Forest does have some more facilities such as hanging bridges, an observation deck, a lodge and there is a waterfall.Santa Elena doesn’t nearly receive as many visitors as Monteverde. Make sure to look for them up in the trees as they are rarely on the ground.The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is open from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day of the year. Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve has 83% of primary forest, with the remainder being mature secondary forest. When we visited in September, it would start raining hard by 11 AM every day.We recommend wearing long hiking pants, closed toed hiking shoes and a comfortable shirt that wicks away moisture. There are few places on earth that so eloquently illuminate the power and beauty of nature than underneath the canopy in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve where eight miles of trails weave through the 765 acres of vast, immersive cloud forest.Walking the trails, one can feel almost insignificant compared to the massive trees bearing the weight of hundreds of different species of bromeliads, mosses, orchids, lichens and liverwort; everything climbing, reaching, grasping toward the canopy to absorb the sunlight. Beginning at the visitor’s center, several trails lead hikers through mostly primary growth cloud forest (about 80% of the reserve) where moss, lichens, bromeliads and tree-dwelling orchids cover almost every surface.Four trails, totaling eight miles, lead from the visitor center into the reserve including a two-thousand foot long handicap-friendly trail. You can hire a guide at the entrance office but you do need to make reservations at least 2 days before hand (you can do it on their website) and have your own transportation.If you need transportation, then you will need to book with a tour company. There are also benches on the trails making it extremely friendly for visitors of all ages.We didn’t see any animals when we were there but we heard lots of birds.
